A Milton Keynes based house building firm has won a judicial review in a battle to construct more than 200 homes in Woburn Sands, including 60 affordable homes.
With the housing crisis in the UK reportedly deepening, Storey Homes are celebrating success after winning their appeal - allowing them to build 60 affordable homes as as part of their new development.
In what their Managing Director has called a David and Goliath moment, Storey Homes have won permission to build over 200 homes. The company who are based in Shenley Wood, first purchased the land in Woburn Sands in 2016 and filed for planning permission.
The initial scheme was approved, but was later blocked by Housing Secretary, James Brokenshire. The Commons public accounts committee have since ruled that blocking development such as this would jeopardise the governments target of building 300,000 new homes in 2019.
Katy Jordan, Managing Director of Storey Homes said that the planning system was "broken." Speaking to MKFM about the Woburn Sands development, she said ‘Storey Homes is a local developer, one of the few independent family owned developers remaining. Our aim is to build quality homes and deliver a scheme that meets the needs of the community. At Woburn Sands we aim to achieve this by providing 30% of the 203 new homes as affordable housing, together with a medical facility and public open space.’
This positive news follows reports earlier this week, that fewer than 1 in 10 family homes are classed as affordable in Milton Keynes.
