Highly sought-after centre-back signs at Stadium MK

MK Dons are thrilled to have completed the signing of 24-year-old defender Sam Sherring, following the expiration of his contract at Northampton Town.

The centre-back becomes the club’s fifth signing of the summer, subject to league and FA clearance, following Conor Lemonheigh-EvansLuke OffordLaurence Maguire and Tommy Leigh, as preparations for the 2024/25 season continue.

Sherring's move to Stadium MK comes on the back of two productive seasons for the Cobblers, playing 77 matches and winning promotion to League One in 2022/23.

A defender who's comfortable on the ball and likes to start attacks, Sherring spent the entirety of his youth career with Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth, before going on loan for the first time to Weymouth in 2018.

A second loan followed with Torquay United for the duration of the 2020/21 season, with Sherring making 45 appearances, including in the National League Play-Off final at Wembley.

The 2021/22 season gave the defender valuable experience playing in the EFL, enjoying loan spells with both Accrington Stanley and Cambridge United, before signing permanently for Northampton in the summer of 2022.

On joining MK Dons, Sherring said, "The plan and the vision for the club, as well as the facilities and everything here, made it a no-brainer decision for me. I'm really happy to be here!"

On becoming Mike Williamson's fifth summer signing, the centre-back said, "We had a really good chat, not just about football but about life! We spoke about where he thinks he can take me as a player and where I can help the club progress and be successful."

On what he'll bring to Stadium MK, the defender said, "The style of play is something that's massive for me! I think it's really attractive and something that'll suit me, hopefully, we can be successful with it."

On signing Sherring, MK Dons Head Coach Mike Williamson said, "Sam fits the profile of the kind of player we want to bring into the club down to the ground. He's young and hungry to succeed but already has meaningful EFL experience and has won promotion from this division before. We're really pleased to have him and look forward to seeing what he adds to our defence."
