Council crackdown on underage sales in Milton Keynes

Shops discovered selling vapes and alcohol to minors.

Milton Keynes City Council has vowed to continue tackling the illegal sale of age-restricted products across the city.

Council officers say they will continue their crackdown on age-restricted product sales through regular ‘test purchasing investigations’ – checks to see if shopkeepers are adhering to rules governing underage sales.

Last week, Trading Standards officers carried out test purchases at eight premises in Milton Keynes and discovered one business selling a vape to an underage purchaser, while another retailer permitted a proxy sale of alcohol – where an adult buys for a minor.

A warning has been issued to both businesses and any further breaches are likely to result in enforcement action.

“The message to businesses remains clear: Challenge 25, always ask for ID, and record any sale refusals. Be vigilant for proxy sales,” said a council spokesperson.

“The City Council’s Trading Standards team is committed to protecting children from harm and ensuring that businesses comply with the law. Businesses found selling age-restricted products to minors risk enforcement action.”
