Conservative Councillors call for £360k to lead 'clean-up crusade' of Milton Keynes

Councillors have stated that Milton Keynes has started to look "tired" due to a lack of care.

Conservative Councillors are calling on Milton Keynes Council to give MK a bit of 'TLC', stating that the city has started to look “tired” due to a lack of care.

The funding would deliver measures focusing on deterring graffiti, littering and fly-tipping.

Underpasses, street lighting, signs and grass are also in the firing line as Conservative Cllrs say they aim to boost and bolster the appearance of MK after "years of neglect".

Combating the rise in rat infestation will also play a part in the strategy.

Cllr Alex Walker, Leader of the Conservative Group, said: “In some areas, particularly older estates, Milton Keynes is looking tired. It’s a dire reflection of the Labour and Liberal Democrat Council in charge that they have left a trail of broken signs, rampant fly-tipping and pest control problems as their record in power.

We’re determined to give MK the TLC it needs and with this proposal, we can make a step in the right direction.”

The call from Conservatives for a clean up comes as Milton Keynes Council recently hit back as local Conservatives asking for more to be done to tackle a 'rat issue'

A spokesperson for Milton Keynes Council's Progressive Alliance told MKFM that they have doubled their investment in pest control and the amount of £120,000 has in fact been proposed, despite Conservative's claims.

The spokesperson said: “Despite what the Conservative Group may claim, the Progressive Alliance has doubled its investment in pest control in the 22/23 budget, proposing £120,000 to tackle rats.

“Working in partnership with Luton Council’s specialist pest control team, we have successfully reduced the rat population in the past year while delivering value for money. Bait boxes and regular street cleaning have proved effective, although we know that the best way to eradicate rats is to remove their food source. This means that wheelie bins and continued weekly collections will be the most effective weapon to tackle the problem going forward.

“Yet again, the Conservatives are recycling year-old stories to help them shape their policies that simply don’t make sense. It is unclear if they are supporting the Labour and Liberal Democrats’ programme, or trying to claim the success as their own, but The Progressive Alliance will continue to put people before politics and deliver what our residents need.”
