A local Labour community campaigner has written to the local Fire Authority, asking them to clean-up a former fire station on Great Holm which is now plagued with graffiti.
In July 2020, Great Holm and Bletchley Fire Stations closed for the final time as the Blue Light Hub opened in Milton Keynes. Since then, the former Great Holm Fire Station building has been sat empty.
Labour Community Campaigner, Shanika Mahendran, who lives locally on Great Holm, is concerned that the former fire station. Since closing, it has become a magnet for anti-social behaviour and vandalism as security hoardings erected around the building have been filled with graffiti.
Shanika has now written to bosses at the local authority asking that action is taken to clean-up the site.
Shanika has also asked that rather than be left blank for the problem to return, the fire authority considers putting artwork on the hoardings or running a competition for local schools to come up with designs for the space.
Community campaigner Shanika Mahendran said: “The graffiti around the closed fire station is an eye-sore and a magnet for anti-social behaviour. Now the fire station is closed the Conservative controlled fire authority obviously have very little interest other than selling the site, however local residents are left to look at a real mess.
“I have now written to the fire authority and asked for the site to be cleaned up. I also want to make sure that it doesn’t come a reoccurring problem, so I’ve asked if the authority could consider adding artwork or running a competition in local schools for designs to put on the hoardings.”
Cllr Zoe Nolan, Labour councillor for Loughton and Shenley ward said: “We campaigned hard for many years to stop the Tories from closing our fire station. Now they are letting the site be vandalised without any action and it looks awful. The local community is very upset, and I hope this time the Conservative controlled authority listens and cleans up the site like Shanika is asking for.”
