City council celebrates Milton Keynes children in care

Milton Keynes City Council is this week recognising and celebrating the achievements of children in care.

Throughout the week – the council’s Corporate Parenting Week – it is running activities and events for youngsters, including a coaching session at MK Dons football club and a trip to Gulliver’s Land theme park – the venue for this year’s True Triumph event, which celebrated local children in care and their carers.

Currently, the council is a legal ‘corporate parent’ to 502 children and young people whose challenging home circumstances mean they need extra support. During this special week, MKCC raises children’s aspirations and encourages others to create opportunities for children in care.

“This week is about celebrating our young people and everything they have achieved,” said Joe Hearnshaw, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Carers. “I’d also like to thank the many wonderful carers who provide loving homes and support. As a local employer, we have several ring-fenced positions for care experienced young people and we’re looking for other organisations to do the same.

“We want to ensure that children in care are fully supported into adulthood and have real opportunities to succeed.”

The council is asking local organisations to come forward if they can help to support young people in care. This may take the form of apprenticeship schemes or guaranteed interviews for any care leavers.
