Five kilometre run brings big donation to cancer unit.
A Milton Keynes man who received treatment for cancer has raised more than £3400 for the city hospital that helped him.
Matt Todd was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer in 2023 and received treatment at Milton Keynes University Hospital’s cancer centre. But less than a year after completing the tough course of medication, Matt ran a mini-marathon to raise the money, as a thank you to the cancer centre where he was looked after.
Dressed as Macho Man Randy Savage, Matt completed a 5km running challenge as a way of thanking staff and highlighting ongoing support from the dedicated teams at the hospital’s unit. He visited the centre recently to present a cheque for £3412 to cancer nurses.
“I spent six months at the cancer centre receiving chemotherapy following my cancer surgery,” said Matt. “My treatment was harsh, and even eight months later, I was still experiencing neuropathy.
“I faced many emotional challenges during chemotherapy, but I was always greeted with smiles and positive energy throughout the centre. The nurses were truly angels, offering hope and positivity; even observing them was inspiring. This is why I wanted to give back for all the kindness I received.
“Also, for myself and others, I want to demonstrate that there is direction and no limits after chemotherapy. It’s only short term pain for long term gain. It’s just simply a matter of reaching that point of saying: I can do this. I’m thankful for my family, friends and work, who all made this wonderful total possible.”
