Lib Dem councillors want greater investment to reduce future deluge impact.
As the fourth anniversary of the devastating local floods of 2020 approaches, Milton Keynes Lib Dems have urged the city council to prioritise more money and greater co-operation to reduce the impact of future flooding.
It was on 23rd December 2020 when Milton Keynes was hit with a downpour which led to flooding and caused widespread disruption across the city and beyond.
Areas including Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, New Bradwell, Olney and Lavendon were badly hit and high river levels on Christmas Eve led to road closures, property damage, and distress for residents.
Lib Dem councillors say they have campaigned for proactive measures to protect homes, streets and roads from the devastating impact of flooding including calling for the creation of a working group to focus on a city-wide strategy for flood prevention.
“Four years on, many residents still remain concerned about the lack of coordinated action to prevent future floods,” said Cllr Jane Carr, Lib Dem leader on Milton Keynes City Council.
“In September, Newport Pagnell was hit yet again with heavy rainfall which caused areas of the town to flood. Thankfully, the local flood group went above and beyond to help residents by distributing sandbags and closing roads. I am pleased that the community are so supportive, but this is not a substitute for a city-wide strategy and more investment.”
“Flooding has a devastating impact on communities and as climate change continues to increase the likelihood of extreme weather, the effects on residents will be more severe,” added Newport Pagnell South Ward Councillor Andy Carr.
“We need a robust and long-term plan for flood prevention before it continues to cause more disruption for residents who live in areas that are at risk of flooding.”
