Athletes and clubs recognised at Milton Keynes sports awards

Fifty years of sport in Milton Keynes have been marked with a spectacular awards night.

Sports MK, an organisation which encourages and promotes a wide range of sport across the city, held its annual Sports Achiever of the Year Awards night at Denbigh School last Friday.

More than 150 guests watched as local schools, clubs and competitors received more than 20 awards for their 2024 endeavours. Taekwondo star Zaw Torley, of Ousedale School, Newport Pagnell, received the coveted Sports Achiever of the Year Award from Milton Keynes Mayor Marie Bradburn.

The unique awards event has been run for decades. Affiliated clubs nominate the athletes from their organisations and a panel of directors from Sport MK determine the winners of each category.

This year there were 21 categories, with 78 nominations in total. Categories included coach, volunteer, club, team men, team women, junior, senior and masters as well as impairment entries.

Past Sports Achiever of the Year titles have been won by Olympic gold medallist Greg Rutherford and former MK Dons midfielder Dele Alli, both born in Milton Keynes.

“Sport MK is a ‘not for profit’ funding organisation promoting and supporting sport in Milton Keynes,” said Colin Kightley, MK Sport spokesman. “Yet again we have held a successful awards evening, supporting local athletes with prizes for winning the awards. All the awards were funded by our generous supporters for which we are extremely grateful.”
