Participators of Running Out of Time, an annual relay group, passed through Milton Keynes on their 2,436km journey through 50 cities, with the aim of raising awareness towards climate change.
The 2024 Relay launched 6th June at Ben Nevis, Scotland, and will pass through 50 cities and towns before they reach their final destination at Big Ben in Parliament Square, London on July 4th. Comprising 210 stages and 80+ visits to climate and nature projects, sporting bodies, venues, schools, events, and iconic locations - its set to be the most spectacular Climate Relay yet.
On Wednesday 19 June, the relay passed through Milton Keynes, starting from the first stage, Cosgrove Primary School. They ran from the primary school to Lodge Lake car park in Great Holm, and continued their run from the car park to the final stage (on foot), Stadium MK. The amazing participators ran a total of 15.17km on foot, before continuing the relay from Stadium MK to Leighton Buzzard by cycling.
Running Out of Time allows residents of the towns and cities to participate in the run against climate change and take part in making a difference for our planet. Residents of Milton Keynes and surrounding areas signed up to take on this challenge and completed it with huge smiles on their faces. The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Marie Bradburn was there in supports of the residents that participated, but also the cause for the run, climate change, a topic that can sometimes be overlooked, but so crucial for ourselves, but also future generations to come.
The Mayor of MK, Cllr Bradburn said, "The relay race, which launched earlier this month at Ben Nevis, is making its way across the UK, and I was delighted to join the MK Leg. It was great to see so many young people with care experience taking part, and also, it was a lovely surprise to see a former work colleague Pete." He is part of the 'Guide Running UK' organisation, running with a partially sighted participant. It was a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages, experiences, and abilities to do their bit to raise awareness about climate change. Wishing the best of luck to all participants on the remaining legs of the relay."
In addition to celebrating the amazing work that has already been done to combat climate change and protect the environment, Running Out of Time hopes to use the Relay to inspire actions, change people’s perceptions, raise awareness, and gently but firmly keep pressure on our governments, educations institutions, employers, and ourselves to take collective action.
The Running Out of Time team takes actions because they believe in a better future, one that avoids the worst effects of climate change and biodiversity loss. A future where everyone has access to food, clean water, and clean air. A future with sustainable, affordable, and renewable energy, and a natural environment that future generations can enjoy.
To take part in the Relay, participants must be over the age of 18, and it’s advisable that they are able to maintain an average pace of seven minutes per kilometre for the duration of a stage.
Running Out of Time operate a Pay What You Want entry, so there is no pressure to pay- you can enter for free!
If participants are under the age of 18 and would like to run a stage, it’s suggested to ask a parent/legal guardian to contact Running Out of Time at support@running-out-of-time.com to see if it can be accommodated.
