A former Milton Keynes councillor has made a private visit to Ukraine and says the country is ‘stunning’ and ‘friendly’

Paul Bartlett, who was a city councillor for the Stony Stratford South West ward and is now the longest-serving Stony Stratford town councillor, says he wanted to travel to Ukraine for a long time. He visited Lviv and Kyiv.

    Councillor says Ukraine is ‘stunning’

A fan of visiting historic and interesting places – he’s already been to destinations such as Bucharest, Greece, and the Balkan States – Paul sought advice from Ukrainian friends before flying to the war-stricken country.

His background in politics and a love of history put Ukraine high up Paul’s list of places to visit, even before the current war with Russia.

“I didn’t go there as a tourist – you can’t be a tourist at a time like this – I went as a visitor,” says Paul, speaking from Kyiv. “It’s safe here but you have to be careful.

“Residents are incredibly resilient to the war Russia has been fighting with Ukraine. It is no surprise to me that these wonderful people have been very welcoming and helpful on my visit and I've made friends over here".

While out walking in Kyiv Paul heard a bomb alert siren go off and was directed back to his hotel through a series of military roadblocks.

"Underneath the look of calm and stoicism, there is an air of fear and an absolute understandable hatred of Russia,” he adds. “When I have been lost, locals have been amazing in helping me get around, often changing their routine to walk me to where I want to be.

"Stunning architecture and monuments are protected from war by boarding and protective layers, as the country is determined not to lose its history and its land.

"When this is all over, I'll be back to see the country I have come to love and admire".
