LIME HEATING BLOG: Winter is coming

Our essential home heating tips to get you ready.

As the colder months approach, the dark evenings and cosy TV dramas mean we’ll all be spending more time in our homes — ideally with a heating system that clicks on whenever we need and want it to. Taking a few minutes now, to show your boiler some TLC and check everything is in good working order, can prevent nasty surprises and costly repairs during the colder months. Here's our simple guide to help you prepare your heating system for winter.

    1. Check your heating and hot water

If your hot water has been working all summer, you could be forgiven for thinking your heating will too but this isn’t necessarily the case. Some systems use zone valves to control different areas or functions. If a zone valve fails, it can result in heating but no hot water, or vice versa. Fire up your heating and make sure you can use both your hot water and heating independently. If not, it’s time to give us a call.

    2. Test your radiators

Your radiators are key to distributing heat throughout your home. Turn on your heating and walk around your home to check that all radiators are warming up and keep an eye out for these common issues:

    • Cold at the top? This means air is trapped inside the radiator and it’s time to bleed them. This is an easy DIY task: simply open the bleed valve (located at the top of the radiator) to release any trapped air. If you’re feeling unsure, drop us an email to info@limeheating.co.uk and we’ll send you a quick video showing you exactly how to do it! Or find it here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/780524580577804

    • Cold at the bottom or patchy heat? This may indicate a buildup of debris and sludge. Not only does this affect the heat your radiators can output, it also puts unnecessary strain on your boiler. A professional power flush cleans your system and improves efficiency.

    • Radiator not coming on? Radiator valves can get stuck, especially after being unused during the summer. When they are stuck, the small pin inside the valve can remain closed, preventing the radiator from coming on.

    3. Check your thermostat

Ensure your thermostat is working correctly and controlling the heating as expected. For extra energy efficiency, consider upgrading to a smart thermostat. These devices can help optimise your heating schedule, saving energy and money by adjusting the temperature based on your lifestyle and habits.

    4. Book a boiler service

If you do one thing, make it this! Regular maintenance not only ensures that your boiler runs safely and efficiently but can also extend its lifespan and help prevent costly repairs during the winter months.

By taking these steps now, you’ll be ready to enjoy a warm home when the temperature drops!
