The incident has taken place between J15 A45 Northampton and J15A A43 Towcester / Northampton Services.
UPDATE 11:00AM - A National Highways spokesperson said:
"If you're heading M1 northbound, please be aware the carriageway remains closed between J15 Northampton and J15A following the serious collision which occurred shortly after midnight. Extensive recovery and clean-up work continues at scene.
"Delays remain of up to 1 hour on the M1 northbound in Northamptonshire. Approx. 3.5 miles of congestion, please allow an extra 60 minutes on to your current journey time."
UPDATE 9:55AM - The lane closure on the M1 southbound has been removed. Please allow delays to ease. Approx. 3 miles of congestion. If you're travelling southbound, please add an extra 20 minutes on to your current journey time.
Northbound remains CLOSED between J15 and J15A.
Complex recovery work is underway.

M1 CLOSURE - The M1 is closed Northbound between J15 - J15A due to a serious incident.
Emergency services remain on scene with Northants Police for ongoing collision investigation work.
Lane 3 remains closed on the M1 southbound in Nothamptonshire.
The closure is expected to be in place for several more hours today.
