Between February and April, MK Council’s Highways team will be carrying out extensive refurbishment works to the Black Horse Canal Bridge on Wolverton Road, Great Linford.

The work will take around 12 weeks to complete and includes:

    - Essential repairs to the bridge structure

    - Waterproofing treatments to the bridge deck

    - Bridleway improvements from the canal up to the bridge

    - New road surface

    - New road markings

    - Steel parapets to either side of the bridge

This is part of an ongoing programme to inspect, maintain and repair the 682 bridges that the council is responsible for across Milton Keynes. The bridge, built in 1964, carries a high volume of traffic over it each day so it needs to be able to cope with this safely.

It will be necessary to partially close the road to provide a safe work site and so that we can remove the road surface to carry out the repairs. Temporary traffic lights will be in place to control traffic during this time which may cause delays, so drivers are advised to use to alternative routes avoiding Wolverton Road.

Nearby businesses will be accessible as normal.

Councillor Emily Darlington, Cabinet Member for the Public Realm, said: “Many people use this bridge on a daily basis so it’s important that we’re carrying out any necessary repairs to keep it safe and in good condition.”

“The Council is committed to ensuring that we invest in the maintenance of our many bridges that not only fulfil a useful purpose, but some are of historical importance including two Grade I Scheduled Monuments.”
